Sports and Youth Director

Project Coach, a nationally-recognized sports based youth development program, seeks a dynamic team player to fill the role of Sports and Youth Director (SYD). The SYD will further our mission of teaching youth to be sport coaches to elementary school children and using the craft of coaching as a vehicle to practice high-impact life skills that lead to success in school, career and community. Project Coach (PC) is a collaborative program of Smith College, Baystate Health Systems, New North Citizens Council, and Springfield Public Schools (SPS).

Position Summary
The key responsibility for the Sport and Youth Director is to oversee the Project Coach sports program. This includes providing supervision of the fields and gymnasiums and taking a leadership role in the training of our our youth coaches. The SYD is a member of the core Project Coach team, and assists the leadership team in strengthening programs, establishing new partnerships, and sharing our work with a wide audience of educators and coaches.

The SYD will oversee youth programming four afternoons each week, involving ~40 adolescent coaches and ~120 elementary students. The SYD is expected to have knowledge of and experience with coaching, sport pedagogy and evidence-based coaching education models. This is a part-time position (15-20 hours/week) during the academic year (late August - June). Employment is through New North Citizens Council.

Roles & Responsibilities
Provide oversight and supervision for afterschool sport and athletics programming at Project Coach sites, including teen coach training programs and afterschool programs for elementary age children. Work with Project Coach Director to ensure that all programs meet PC’s standard of “Fun, Fair, and Safe.”
Implement PC coach training curriculum as developed by PC Director and Leadership Team. Lead teen coach trainings that develop teens into effective youth sport coaches who plan and execute games-based sport sessions for elementary school students. The SYD’s priority is to help adolescent coaches develop mastery in coaching and to support teen coaches in leading sports activities for elementary students that foster social emotional skill development and a positive team culture.
Provide on-site supervision of Project Coach program staff and coach interns, including physical education teachers and SPS teachers and paraprofessionals, part-time PC staff, and teen interns.
Mentor teens in the development and practice -- through coaching -- of the high-impact life skills that create success in school and community.
Train, supervise, and assess the performance of adolescent coaches both on the field and in the classroom
Integrate evidence-based coaching models and sport pedagogy into coach trainings and all youth programs.
Fulfill other related duties required for the successful execution of PC Afterschool Sports and PC Youth Coaching and Leadership programs.
Represent PC at community events, academic conferences, and other events as needed.

Experience in education, sports management, exercise science, personal training, or related field; college degree or commensurate experience is required.
Extensive coaching experience or a combination of related experience that shows preparation for the SYD job.
Applicants will be required to complete child safety clearances and background checks as required by New North Citizens Council and Smith College, first aid training, and coaching certifications. This position is dependent on CORI background check and federal fingerprint clearance.

Hours & Days: 15-20 hours/week, during afterschool hours:
Tuesdays @ Smith College: 4pm-7pm
Wednesdays @ Gerena Elementary School: 3-6pm
Thursdays & Fridays @ Gerena Elementary School: 3-6:30pm
Occasional Saturday and Sunday trainings (usually monthly)

Salary: $20-30/hour, depending on experience.
